How to negotiate your salary
Last updated: June 2026
Know your market value
Research salary ranges for your role, industry, and city before negotiating. Use Workly's salary insights, talk to peers, and check industry reports. Go into the conversation with data, not feelings.
Let them go first
If asked about salary expectations, deflect politely: 'I'm more focused on finding the right fit — I'm sure we can find a number that works for both of us.' Let the employer make the first offer.
Negotiate the full package
Salary is one piece. Consider provident fund, health benefits, annual leave, learning budgets, flexible hours, and remote options. A Rs 10,000/month learning budget or remote Fridays can be worth more than a small base bump.
Practice the ask
Frame your counter-offer around value: 'Based on my experience leading teams that cut response time 30%, I'm looking for X. I'm excited about this role and confident I can deliver.' Be specific, be confident, be ready to walk.
